In Sicily, there is a buzzing sound that tells much more than it sounds. It is the soft sound of the Sicilian black beesa native subspecies threatened with extinction, but crucial to the balance of nature.
Tenuta Gorghi Tondi has chosen to join the project "Honeybees & Vineyard, promoted by the SOStain Sicily Foundationwith the support of the FAI - Federation of Italian Beekeepers and Intesa Sanpaolo. A concrete and innovative initiative that combines organic viticulture with the protection of biodiversity.
Why are bees important in vineyards?
Bees, besides being valuable pollinators, are natural sentinels of the environmentTheir presence and health is a direct indicator of the quality of the agricultural ecosystem.
In our case, it means a lot: we cultivate 130 hectares of organic vineyard within a WWF oasisbetween Lake Preola and Gorghi Tondi, a delicate environment where nature and viticulture coexist in perfect balance.
The Apis mellifera sicula, known as the Sicilian black bee, is hardy, industrious and perfectly adapted to the island's climate. Protecting it means protecting an entire genetic and cultural heritage.
What does the Honeybees & Vineyard project involve?
The objective of the project is twofold:
✅ Contributing to the repopulation of Sicilian black beesinstalling beehives in organic farming areas
✅ Monitoring the environment through studies on the health of bees and surrounding soils
On our estate we have placed hives managed by experienced beekeepersin synergy with the sustainable practices we adopt every day in the vineyard.
Thanks to careful data collection, we will be able to scientifically evaluate the positive effects of sustainable agriculture on bee welfare, and vice versa.
A Sicilian network for sustainability
We are one of the 10 selected Sicilian wineries to participate in the project. Together, we are creating a real conscious viticulture networkwhich starts with bees and leads to a more careful, ethical and shared agricultural model.
The route will end with a special event: the International Symposium 'Sustainable Interactionswhere the results of the project, the honey produced by the hives and the testimonies of the companies involved will be presented.
Wine is an agricultural act, the future is cooperation
For us at Tenuta Gorghi Tondi, caring for the land means making daily choices that speak of respect, listening and responsibility.
We have always believed that the sustainability is not a fadbut an evolutionary process, also made up of small gestures with a big impact. Like welcoming a beehive between the rows, listening to the buzzing and knowing that we are doing the right thing.
If wine is the fruit of the earth, then the earth needs allieseven small ones, like bees. And we are happy to be part of this silent but vital dialogue.
