The Grillo company on a 'wine continent

We often like to say that Tenuta Gorghi Tondi is the estate of Grillo, and at the same time, we are aware that we perfectly embody the island's viticulture.

With its 115 ha of vineyard and its over 15 cultivated varietiesthe estate mirrors that same richness and biodiversity, and that 'wine continent' that is often referred to when describing wine Sicily. A region with almost 100,000 ha of vineyards, characterised by very different soils and pedoclimatic conditions, and more than 60 native varieties.

Gorghi Tondi has made Grillo its flagship grape variety since its origins, when great-grandmother Dora was in search of the best soils for producing Marsala wine. On the Mazara del Vallo coast, the princely variety of western Sicily expresses all its versatility, thanks also to the calcareous soils and the context strongly characterised by the sea and iodine. Discover here how the most recent native Sicilian variety was born.

Grillo is the undisputed protagonist on the estate, with almost 40% of vineyard area. It is the expression of our respect for the vocation and tradition of these places, but also such a ductile and versatile raw material that allows us to decline it "in all possible and imaginable ways", and with surprising results.

Among our 'wines by nature', Grillo is declined in no less than 5 types and styles:

- in the sparkling version in the Palmarès Brut;

- as a still and dry wine, also partially aged in wood, in the Coste a Preola and in the Kheiré Reserve;

- still, in the form of a late harvest produced from grapes attacked by noble rot in the rare Grillodoro,;

- and, finally, in its original, oxidative version, reminiscent of the ancestor of Marsala wine in our Ziller47.

Discover all the declinations of this chameleonic grape variety in our wine shop, in Mazara del Vallo, and in the online shop.
