Did you know that Tenuta Gorghi Tondi produces a unique wine, indeed 'unique in the world', born with the first harvests on the estate?
In the early 2000s, in late October, in the Grillo vineyard overlooking the sea, just a few metres from the Mediterranean, a peculiar mould slowly covered the grapes remaining on the vine. To the untrained eye, it was simple mould, which had to be combated promptly in order to safeguard the vines before winter.
In reality, that thin layer of Botrytis cinerea, the fungus responsible for the phenomenon, was an absolute rarity in Sicily. It was our oenologist, Tonino Guzzo, who, a few years earlier, had witnessed this unusual occurrence in another vineyard on the island, who recognised the so-called 'noble rot'.
It was he who proposed to Michele Sala to vinify those very special grapes and to produce, in the best years, a late harvest wine, the only mulled Made in Sicily. It was 2006 and thus was born the Grillodoro,.
It is a rare and unusual wine, limited in number and obtained from a multi-stage harvest, in which only a few bunches or even a few grapes per day are picked. Only a few thousand bottles are produced each year, and they are not put on the market until three and a half years after the harvest. It is an expression of the great versatility of the Cricket, the main grape variety on the estate, here vinified sweet.
It is an enveloping, sunny, generous wine with a light saline note, perfect for pampering oneself and accompanying desserts or a nice cheese board. Discover it also in the online shop and in our tasting packages.
