OUR NATURE
NATIVE GRAPES
The grapes of the estate are mainly indigenous, such as Grillo, Zibibbo, Catarratto, Nero d’Avola, Frappato, Nerello Mescalese, and Perricone, but also Syrah, which has long been present in Sicily, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Noir. Among these grapes, Grillo represents the undisputed star at the family estate, with nearly 40% of the area planted with vineyards. It is a varietal that express our respect for terroir and traditions of this area, but also a raw material so flexible and versatile that allows us to vinify it “in every possible way.”
Tenuta Gorghi Tondi takes its name from the protected natural area in Mazara del Vallo, Sicily.
This represents a great challenge for us in terms of production, as it allows us to work in a sustainable way on a large canvas of over 320 acres. Our vineyards, despite their apparent large size, are actually small pieces of land of varying sizes, which can measure from 2.5 acres to just 7.5 acres approximately, and substantially different from one another. A difference made up of specific locations, farther or closer to the sea, soil composition, exposure, ventilation and, last but not least, the age of the vineyards and the specific varieties.
If in the vineyard, as well as in the cellar, the approach is that of certified organic, and it is in the cellar itself that we translate the great diversity of our vineyards into “zonation”, represented by the individual tanks in which the grapes of a single plot of vineyard are processed separately. A meticulous and attentive approach, managed thanks to the expertise acquired over the years and assisted by technology, which allows us to best express the different facets of the estate and to make the great kaleidoscope that is Tenuta Gorghi Tondi into wine, experimenting with winemaking. This is also possible thanks to a dedicated area of the production cellar, equipped with tanks and equipment capable of handling very small quantities of grapes, the same used, for example, for our “limited edition” and more valuable product, our botrytized Grillodoro, produced in the best vintages in a few specimens.
