Terroir Grillo

The Grillo is the spokesman of respect for the vocation and tradition of these places, but also a ductile and versatile raw material that can be declined 'in all possible and imaginable ways'.

Tenuta Gorghi Tondi dedicates a large part of its vineyards (about 35%) to the Grillo vine, located partly within the Lake Preola and Gorghi Tondi Nature Reserve, and partly overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Here, the high day-night temperature range, the 'aerosol' action of the sea breeze and the favourable climatic conditions allow grapes to be harvested in perfect condition.

Freshness, aromatic intensity, minerality and savouriness are the hallmarks of Tenuta Gorghi Tondi's Grillo, the heritage of a unique terroir, enhanced by ancient, artisanal production wisdom.

For Gorghi Tondi, Grillo is the emblematic grape variety of an entire wine production, very versatile and able to give life to elegant and multifaceted wines: from the sparkling Brut version of Palmarès, to the still and 'fresh' version of Coste a Preola Grillo, to the selection of the ripest vineyard in Kheiré, our single-vineyard Riserva.

From this same variety, Gorghi Tondi produces two wines that are emblematic in the region's oenological panorama: Grillodoro, the only Sicilian Muffato wine, obtained from a late harvest of overripe grapes attacked by Botrytis Cinerea, the so-called noble rot, and the wine of tradition, that ancestor of Marsala wine so dear to the local peasant tradition handed down from generation to generation, Ziller 47, dedicated to the founding father of Gorghi Tondi, Michele Sala.

A white, unfortified, pre-British style wine aged for over 10 years in large, slightly drained oak barrels from one of the estate's oldest vineyards.

Five different interpretations of the same, extraordinary grape passe-partout for an exciting experience, full of suggestions that translate the most intense flavours and aromas of Sicily into the glass. Grillo is therefore Gorghi Tondi's native grape par excellence, so much so that it can be considered the very soul of its production philosophy.

In addition to Grillo, many grapes, mostly indigenous, populate the estate's vineyards: Zibibibbo, Damaschino, Nero d'Avola, Catarratto, Frappato, Nerello Mascalese and Perricone, but also Syrah, present in Sicily since the 18th century, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. From this same variety, Gorghi Tondi produces two wines that are emblematic in the region's oenological panorama: Grillodoro, the only Sicilian mildewed wine, obtained from a late harvest of overripe grapes attacked by Botrytis Cinerea, the so-called noble rot, and the wine of tradition, that ancestor of Marsala wine so dear to the local peasant tradition handed down from generation to generation, Ziller 47, dedicated to the founding father of Gorghi Tondi, Michele Sala.
