OUR NATURE

SUSTAINABILITY

Gorghi Tondi, located inside a nature reserve protected by the WWF, could only make the green attitude one of the main components of its wine making and production vision. On the other hand, protection of the environment, low impact production and eco-sustainability are primary factors for the making of a good wine, because cultivating the land is not enough, you must respect it as well.

Being located within a WWF Nature Reserve, Gorghi Tondi estate experiences a unique condition, which cannot ignore the respect for nature and its balance. Through a complex and virtuous process, the winery has managed to obtain certified quality grapes, by banning synthetic chemicals and genetically modified organisms, in line with the requirements of the strictest organic farming standards, as the only way to recover authentic flavors.

OUR NATURE

ORGANIC PRODUCTION

Organic agriculture leads to a deeper relationship between the vine and the land, thus characterizing the fruits with a “peculiarity” that welcomes all that nature can offer when it is left free to express itself. If you don’t force nature, working for it and not against, you can obtain, spontaneously, its best fruits.

The concept of organic in agriculture refers to a method of agricultural production that enhances the natural fertility of the soil ecosystem, the healthiness of products, and strengthens sustainability by avoiding the use of synthetic products such as pesticides and chemical fertilizers. The organic regime, therefore, involves banning synthetic chemicals and genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in the vineyard, as well as in the cellar, where more restrictive and stringent winemaking practices apply compared to so-called “conventional” productions.

The specific location of some company vineyards, which fall within the Integral Regional Reserve of Lago Preola and Gorghi Tondi, has allowed some of the wines produced on the estate to be classified as organic since 2014. These are, clearly, the vineyards located within the reserve, which has also been a WWF oasis since 1998, where Tenuta Gorghi Tondi boasts 35 hectares of property (out of 350 total). These have benefited from the so-called abbreviation of the vineyard conversion period, initiated for all plots in 2013. The “early” certification was possible because the protected area has been subject to very rigorous environmental constraints since the early 1990s, allowing its suitability to be verified well in advance of the three years required by the normal organic conversion process.

In 2016, the remaining estate vineyards completed the conversion process and received organic certification. This means that from the same year’s harvest, the wines produced in the family vineyards can bear the Euro-leaf symbol and the wording “organic wine” on the label, as per European regulations.
